When I first started attending St. Andrew’s, I felt a calling to get involved in our church community. As Jesus calls us to serve, I wanted to answer that call, but I wasn’t sure where I could best contribute. Soon, I heard about a shortage of volunteers in our youth ministry program, especially male volunteers.
This caught my attention, even though I had never attended youth programs growing up and had no prior experience working with young people. I couldn’t help but think, “Me, leading young people? I wouldn’t have thought it.” However, I understand the importance of role models in young people’s lives, Christian role models no less, and I felt compelled to step up and serve, so I talked to a volunteer to learn more about the opportunity.
Since joining the youth ministry, I’ve experienced many joys and moments of encouragement. Although I’m constantly reminded of the age gap when the youth reference new popular culture that goes over my head, I still find a wonderful connection with them. As they share their joys, anxieties, and trials, I’m reminded of my own experiences. Together, we’ve created a safe space to learn about the love of Jesus and share with one another.
One aspect of youth ministry that I particularly enjoy is organizing the games that kick off each session. These can range from icebreakers to help us get to know each other better, to Bible passage-inspired games that share our beliefs in a joyful way, or simply silly fun that breaks down social barriers. These activities set the mood for the rest of the session and reflect a core truth of our faith: joyfulness in Christ.
joyfully share the gospel and rejoice in the truth of God
I’ve come to realize that while Christianity prompts us to ask serious questions that require deep reflection, self-discipline, and hard work, which may end up making us feel a little anxious (as I certainly was on my first day in youth ministry), it also calls us to joyfully share the gospel and rejoice in the truth of God.
As I’ve grown more comfortable in my role, I’ve even had the opportunity to give talks on Bible passages to the youth, with guidance from our youth minister. This experience has been both challenging and rewarding, pushing me to deepen my own understanding of Scripture.
Volunteering in youth ministry has undoubtedly helped me grow and deepen my own faith. As the youth move up from kids’ programs, they begin to explore their faith more individually. They ask questions that I’ve grappled with before, as well as questions I don’t have immediate answers to. During our Bible studies, it’s particularly exciting to hear perspectives that I wouldn’t have considered on my own. This constant engagement with Scripture and faith discussions has kept my own spiritual journey dynamic and growing.
If you’re considering ways to serve in our church community, consider youth ministry. It’s a challenging, rewarding, and joy-filled way to live out your faith and make a lasting impact on the next generation of believers. If you’re interested in learning more about my experience or how you can get involved, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me or a member of staff.
