This one’s for the guys!

I currently work in Hong Kong while my wife and kids live in Singapore, which means I spend a lot of time flying back and forth between the two countries. I’ve recently learned there’s a term for people like me—I’m an astronaut!

Not long after I first moved to Hong Kong, I made a ‘to-do’ list. One item on that list was to ‘meet three people in Hong Kong outside of work.’ One way I tried to check that off was by joining the Men’s Growth Group. And wow, the Lord far exceeded my hopes and expectations!

The Men’s Growth Group meets every Thursday evening for a couple of hours. At the moment, there are just under seventy of us, and the number keeps growing rapidly! We usually kick things off by sharing pizza and catching up as a big group. Then we break into four smaller groups for a Bible study that usually follows the Sunday sermon series. After that, we split into pairs or threes for a time of prayer.

The group includes men from all walks of life, spanning different backgrounds, age groups, and nationalities. What unites us is our shared love for Jesus. One of the best things about the group is how welcoming and encouraging it is. You’ll meet guys at every stage of their walk with the Lord—some have been in the group for over 20 years, while others are completely new to the faith.

What unites us is our shared love for Jesus

It’s also a great place to just talk about ‘men’s stuff’. No topic is off-limits. We share our experiences and understanding to help make sense of things through a biblical lens. As time goes on, deeper relationships naturally form. Whether you’re facing a challenge or have already come through one, there’s often someone in the group who can relate. Building those connections can take time, but you’ll meet a mix of personalities introverts, extroverts, and everyone in between, all ready to support one another. We all recognise that we need others to help us walk faithfully with Jesus.

I’m thankful that the group doesn’t just meet on Thursdays, it’s much more than a weekly Bible study. We enjoy spending time together through meals (some of them quite big!), quiz nights, hikes, and opportunities to serve. One highlight was a trip to Malaysia last year, where a group of us helped a housing charity build a house from scratch—don’t worry, we were properly supervised! These shared experiences help us bond, deepen friendships, and live out our faith in meaningful, practical ways.

One verse we often reflect on is Proverbs 27:17: “As iron sharpens iron, so a person sharpens his friend.” If you’re new to St Andrew’s, or even if you’ve been attending for years but haven’t joined us yet, why not come along? You’ll be warmly welcomed.
