This will be a surprise to no one, but here at St Andrew’s we will never stop beating that drum to remind you the importance of reading your Bible everyday.
Why? Well, let me just give you a few reasons:
1. It’s Precious… more than gold and sweeter than honey (Psalm 19:10)
2. It’s Powerful… living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword to pierce deep into the heard and discern one’s thoughts and intentions (Hebrews 4:12)
3. It’s Profitable… breathed out by God for teaching, reproof, correction, and for training in righteousness to equip God’s people for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
4. It’s Permanent… in the light of eternity, God’s word is the only thing that matters and will stand forever (Isaiah 40:8)
I assume what most Christians struggle with is not that they don’t agree with the list above, but that they just can’t seem to put daily Bible-reading into practice.
Where would you start? I’ve got a few tips for that too:
Even if it’s just 15 minutes meditating on a few verses, try to force yourself to be disciplined and spend some time reading the Bible every day. Perhaps start by going through a gospel or part of the Psalms.
Make it fun.
Sit in a comfortable chair with a soft cushion and a nice hot cuppa… or whatever you find enjoyable as you crack open your Bible. This is a treat, not a chore.
Make it personal.
Reflect on how you can apply or appreciate the truth in that passage in a more personal way in your life.
Pray a lot.
We need help from God to open our spiritually blind eyes so that we can understand and respond to his word. Ask for a humble and teachable heart as we approach the Bible.
God’s word is an endless treasure trove that encourages and challenges us as the ultimate anchor in an ever-shifting world. I pray that you’ll be able to find much joy in spending more time in your Bible everyday and be rewarded with the priceless gems it has to offer.
