Committing to Community

It’s no secret that I’m a massive introvert.  But whenever I need the motivation to get out of my shell and interact with people, one of my go-to Bible verses is Hebrews 10:24-25. “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.”

Christian fellowship isn’t an optional bonus. It’s an essential part of helping each other finish this race so that we can make it until that final Day (with a capital “D”). In the Bible, not all days are equal, and some are more significant than others. The most important day for Christians living after Jesus’ death and resurrection on the Cross is waiting for the day when he will return.

Through the ups and downs of life, there are plenty of things that can derail us from finishing this Christian race. That’s why it’s so important that we do not do this alone and mutually spur each other on in the faith. Even if it doesn’t come naturally, we must push ourselves to love others better day by day. This isn’t being “fake”, it’s being “intentional”.

In time, with the Holy Spirit’s help, I find that it does get easier. Don’t get me wrong, I still feel exhausted after a full Sunday of hanging out with people, but the joy in my heart afterwards is real and sustains me through it all.

So what might Christian community look like?

It might be joining lunch after the morning service, or dinner after the evening service, with brothers and sisters from church (and being intentional about including spiritual conversations rather than just friendly banter).

It might be reading a short book of the Bible with a friend to dive more deeply into God’s word and reflect on how you can apply it in your personal life.

Or it could be doubling (or tripling) up to form a prayer-buddy group, to create a safe space where you can go deep and share your greatest highs and lowest lows honestly.

Serving together with your Growth Group is a wonderful way to deepen your relationship with each other too!

Believe me, I really do understand how it can feel intimidating and a lot of commitment. However, I have also experienced how rewarding it can be when you force yourself out of your comfort zone. It doesn’t have to be every week, or all of those things I’ve listed.

As we begin this new year, let me challenge you to consider taking that first step to dive a little deeper into Christian fellowship. Encouraging one another to keep running the race until that final, glorious Day. Who knows, you might even grow to really enjoy it!
