One of the great tragedies of all crises is that it is the poor and marginalized that feel the burden and the cost the most. One partner shared with me recently that “50% of our community have lost their jobs in the food and beverage industries…many families are now moving into one room together.” One of many truly heartbreaking stories.

At St Andrew’s, we want to help those in need. Indeed, it is our biblical duty and honor to serve the Lord in this way. The Bible is drenched in verses with a concern for the poor. Proverbs 14:31 reminds us:  “He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honours God.”

Some of our Mission Partners are working amongst the poorest and vulnerable in the city. These include Christian Action Centre serving Refugees in Chung King Mansion, ICM bringing Christ to the Nepali community in Jordan, and St Barnabas serving the poor and elderly in Western District. You may have noticed we have been drawing attention to these partners in our Sunday online services and we are thankful and touched by the wonderful response already and yet we know there is so much more we can do. Here are some practical steps that we could all contribute to in making a difference.

1. Supermarket Vouchers – With so many people losing jobs in the city food money has become a concern. Vouchers are a wonderful way to bring immediate relief. These can be posted to St Andrew’s or directly to each partner.
2. Masks and Sanitizer – Please help in providing this essential resource for many who simply cannot make it a budget priority. Our partners inform me that children’s masks are desperately needed. Again masks can be sent here or direct.
3. Jobs – While this will only apply to a few of us. If you have networks or access to jobs in industries such as hospitality or security you could provide a life-changing opportunity and make a difference in Hong Kong.
