William Carey, often called the “father of modern missions,” dedicated his life to translating the Bible, establishing schools, and proclaiming the good news of Jesus to the people of India.
Living in Serampore, Carey worked tirelessly to equip others and lay the foundation for future mission efforts. His commitment to God’s call to ‘go’ inspired a global movement, emphasising the transformative power of mission work. Originally a humble cobbler from England, Carey responded to God’s call to ‘go’ and dedicated his life to translating the Bible, establishing schools, and proclaiming the good news to the people of India. His efforts laid the foundation for countless others to follow in mission.
The Langham Foundation, while operating in a different era, shares in this vision of empowering the global church. Founded by John Stott, Langham focuses on equipping leaders through biblical training and theological education, ensuring they can effectively serve their communities. Their mission ensures pastors and church leaders worldwide are prepared to share the gospel effectively and serve their communities with wisdom and faithfulness. This global mission initiative reminds us that God’s work spans every nation and culture, equipping his church to make disciples faithfully.
Mission is not an optional extra for the church; it is central to who we are and what we are called to do. From Genesis to Revelation, we see God’s heart for the nations. He called Abraham to be a blessing to all peoples. He sent prophets to proclaim his mercy and justice. But ultimately, he sent Jesus, who himself said, “As the Father has sent me, I am sending you” (John 20:21).
God’s work spans every nation and culture
As we look ahead to our annual Mission Sunday on January 12th, we’ll have the opportunity to explore this calling further. The day will feature inspiring stories from our mission partners, including the Langham Foundation’s work. After the 9:30 and 11:30 services our local mission partners will be around for us to speak with to help us explore how we can engage in mission through praying, giving, volunteering, and going. There will also be a special prayer time and missions-focused sermons to challenge and encourage us.
Perhaps God is stirring you to take the next step? Could you commit to praying regularly for one of our mission partners? Could you volunteer with one of our local outreach projects? Could you give financially to support mission efforts? Or perhaps you feel the nudge to explore going—whether short-term or long-term—to bring the gospel to those who have never heard it.
Mission Sunday is an opportunity to reflect on the why of mission: because God is a God of mission, and we, his church, are called to join him. Let’s step forward together in faith, prepared to pray, give, volunteer, and go.
